Our embedded systems course

Embedded systems are every where around us. Typical examples of  systems with them are…

1) Home appliances

2) Automobiles

3) Cell phones

4) Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

5) Computer peripherals

6) Analytical , lab & process industry

7) Instrumentation

Embedded systems involve both hardware (electronic circuits) & Firmware (software) design. The firmware is developed using any of the several programming languages such as…

1) “C”

2) “C++”

3) “BASIC”

4) “PASCAL”

5) “FORTH”

Programming in assembly is tedious, cumbersome & specific to a particular processor or controller. People with good hardware background usually program in assembly & a high language such as “C”.  False notion among many people is that embedded system involve programming only.  Hardware design is as important as the firmware development. It is even more involved and requires good logical reasoning.  The current trend in embedded systems is to lower the PCB real estate, thus building more energy efficient systems with less failures due to physically less component failures. Newer devices, newer protocols like IIC, SPI, MICROWIRE, CAN, LIN etc help in lowering PCB real estate.

It is for this reason that one would require special training for embedded system development.
